The Love of God in Jesus

See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we would be called children of God; and such we are. For this reason the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we will be. We know that when He appears, we will be like Him, because we will see Him just as He is. And everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure” (1 John 3:1-3).

“For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known. But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love” (1 Corinthians 13:12-13).

“God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us”

(Romans 5:8).

From the moment of birth we are hostile to God’s commands. Sin is hard coded into our DNA, making ourselves enemies of God in our inherent rebellious nature to His will, and the pursuit of our own selfish desires, with little or no consideration for God or neighbor.

Even our acts of righteousness are stained with self interest and impure motives.  We selectively show affection and love to people we love, and those useful to fulfill our personal ambitions and pleasures, and ignore or pull down people we dislike.

Yet, it is against this despicable condition of the human soul that the Most High God, the Father of mercies and God who is pure, perfect, and is in essence incorruptible love - humbles Himself to bestow upon us the title of children of God.

It is against the backdrop of this terrifying darkness in our human heart that the light of God’s love, in the atoning sacrifice of His only Begotten Son, shines brighter than the sun in all its strength.

We would do well to think deeply, and think often of God’s perfect act of love for us in the cross of Christ. To remind ourselves daily of the magnitude and priceless cost of our salvation. To pray with all our heart that we may somehow come to understand the love of God for us, and be transformed to love people with the same kind of love, which God has demonstrated to us in Jesus - the Shepherd and Guardian of your soul.

For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God.

Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen” (Ephesians 3:14-21).

If we are followers of Jesus and want to be deeply changed to become more like our precious Lord and Saviour, we must come to Him daily in child-like trust. And consistently pray that God will transform us as we come to know Him more through His words, actions and promises.

But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit” (2 Corinthians 3:18).
